TOLL PLAZA LOCATIONS
The locations of toll plazas are determined by considering several factors, namely:
  • Where possible to locate such facilities on new sections of road or on sections where major upgrading will be undertaken.
  • The characteristic of the traffic in terms of its trip origin and destination and trip length (i.e. the length of toll road that is used)
  • Road geometry and safety aspects
  • The level of traffic demand
  • The ability of users to pay
TOLL TARIFFS
These are derived also by considering several factors, namely:
  • The benefits offered by the new or upgraded toll road when compared to the costs of travel on the alternative routes.
  • The length of the tolled section.
  • The ability of users to pay
  • The level of toll generally charged on existing toll roads in South Africa
All the above are used with the objective of determining the most equitable toll strategy and toll rate pricing structure capable of realising the revenue which can recover the costs that will be expended on the road.
